RIKEN offers competitive salaries and benefits that are commensurate with experience and skills. Researchers will find that they are able to live comfortably in Japan.

At RIKEN, salaries are paid directly into employees' bank accounts each month. The various tax and social insurance deductions generally amount to roughly 20% of a full-time employee's salary.

Salary breakdown

Some RIKEN employment programs have fixed salaries systems, as described below.

Initiative Research Unit Program

Annual salary: 10.9 million yen (from which social insurance premiums and income tax will be deducted). A commuting allowance (up to a specified maximum) and housing allowance (partial payment of rent) will also be paid.

Research budget: 38.5 million yen/year, from which the unit leader is expected to recruit and hire several research and technical staffers. The first year's budget may be supplemented with 10 million yen in startup funds.

Foreign Postdoctoral Research/Special Postdoctoral Researcher Programs

An annual salary will be paid in the monthly amount of 487,000 yen (from which social insurance premiums and income tax will be deducted). A commuting allowance (up to a specified maximum) and housing allowance (partial payment of rent) will also be paid.

International Program Associate (Joint Graduate School Program)

IPAs do not receive a salary but they do receive a stipend of 5,200 yen per day.

Free on-campus housing is provided, when available, for the duration of the IPA's stay at RIKEN. When campus housing is unavailable, RIKEN may pay a housing allowance of up to 70,000 yen per month. (The IPA must pay utility costs.)

One roundtrip airfare between RIKEN and the IPA's home country is also provided.
