RIKEN employees are enrolled in the Science and Technology Health Insurance Society. In the event of off-duty illness and injury, childbirth, or death, the health insurance society provides the insured and their dependents with a variety of services, such as medical treatment and allowances.

In general, Insured persons and their dependents pay 30% of the cost of the medical or dental treatment (20% in the event they are pre-school age children). People over 70 may pay 10% or 30% of medical expenses, depending  their incomes.

More information is available to current RIKEN employees via the society's website. (The site is password protected and only accessible from within the RIKEN network.)

Basic Coverage

  • Examinations

Your health insurance includes subsidies for checkups outside RIKEN.

  • Medication

Your health insurance covers medicines as necessary for treatment, as long as they are listed on the National Health Insurance Drug Price Standard (NHI).

  • Therapeutic material

The health insurance program covers therapeutic materials, such as gauze and bandages. It also covers rental expenses for braces, artificial limbs, hernia belts, and other items that may be necessary.

  • Treatment and surgery

In addition to treatment and surgery (including injections), your insurance also covers radiotherapy, psychological therapy, nutritional consultation, and other necessary therapeutic services. The insurance, however, does not cover specific treatments still in the trial phase at medical colleges or those not officially recognized in the Japanese medical field.

  • Hospitalization

Insured persons and their dependants pay 30% of the cost of the medical or dental treatment (20% for pre-elementary school age children)

Dental Coverage

The Science and Technology Health Insurance covers all types of dental treatment, but is limited to dental treatment using authorized methods and materials. Insured persons and dependents must cover additional costs if they request treatment or materials not authorized by the health insurance society.

Payment of Benefits

When you need to consult a doctor or dentist, you will only be charged 30% (20% for pre-elementary school age children) of the actual costs so long as you show your health insurance card. In some cities and towns, medical treatment for infants and small children is free.

If you are enrolled in the Science and Technology Health Insurance Society, you will be refunded any medical costs exceeding 10,000 yen in any given month.

Premium

Your share of the premium for your health and dental insurance will be automatically deducted from your monthly salary. Your employer will also pay a portion of the premium. The amount deducted depends on your salary.
