When you leave Japan, you must make sure that you have properly cancelled any contracts you have entered into. In particular, take note of the following: Bank accountsBefore closing your bank account(s), make sure that any automatic payments have for phone, electricity, gas, water, credit card bills etc. have been made. If you close your bank account and leave Japan without cancelling contracts and confirming that you have made all outstanding payments, you will cause your employer and/or guarantor(s) a great deal of trouble. Health insurance cardBefore you leave Japan, you must return your health insurance card. If you are directly employed by RIKEN, you can return your card to the Personnel Division. If you are not employed by RIKEN, you must return your national health insurance card to your city hall. If you do not do this, you will continue to incur insurance premium charges. Alien registration cardWhen leaving Japan, your passport will be stamped as you pass through immigration. You should return your alien registration card to the immigration officer at that time. If you do not return your alien registration card, you will still be considered resident in Japan and you will therefore continue to be liable for residents' tax. |
