DVDs in Japan use region 2, the same as Europe. DVDs from foreign countries may not work in Japan unless you have the right equipment.

In rental shops you can borrow DVDs for about 300 yen, for two days for new releases and for a week for older ones. To join a rental shop you need to show some ID.
