Most public payphones take prepaid phone cards, or 10 yen and 100 yen coins. Only entirely unused coins are returned, so if you put in a 100 yen coin but do not use all of it, you will get nothing back. Phone cards can be purchased at convenience stores or from vending machines. 500 yen cards are 50 units, and 1000 yen cards are 105 units. The convenience store above the main cafeteria on the Wako campus sells 1000 yen cards, but you should contact them in advance if you want to purchase several cards at once. If you want to make an international call from a payphone, you have to use a grey phone, or a green “international and domestic telephone” using a World Prepaid Card (available from convenience stores). |
