Bicycles are very convenient for going to the shops and getting around the local area. CostBasic ones are available from supermarkets for about 15,000 yen. Mountain bikes and racing bikes cost 40,000 yen or more, but second-hand bicycles can be as cheap as 5000 yen. Ask ICO Room or check the classifieds in the free Newspapers and magazines. Bicycle LocksDespite Japan’s low crime rates, bicycle theft is not uncommon, especially near stations. Expensive bicycles should be secured to immovable objects with high-quality locks. RegistrationWhen you buy a new bicycle, the shop staff will ask you if you want to register it with the police, for 500 yen. This is unlikely to help in recovering your bicycle if it gets stolen, but it does enable you to prove that you are the owner if the police stop you. It is definitely a good idea to register your bicycle if you bought it second-hand. LightsAll bicycles must have front lights, and back lights and spoke reflectors are also recommended. ParkingParking bicycles on the street is banned in many areas and near many train stations, where there are often large bicycle-parks (sometimes automated and mechanized) that cost money to use. Check with the local city hall for details. |
