Support Systems For Families

FamilySupport-On-campus Childcare

RIKEN offers on-campus childcare at its Wako, Yokohama, and Kobe campuses. Space is limited, so interested parents should put their name on the waiting list as soon as possible. The Wako campus facility also offers temporary care for elementary school children. See below for more information.

Childcare Handbook

Every year RIKEN's Personnel Division publishes a Childcare Handbook. It is an A5-size booklet containing information on RIKEN's support systems for pregnancy, childbirth, and childcare, as well as subsidies, services, and other childcare information offered by local governments.

RIKEN employees should contact the Personnel Division for a hard copy, otherwise the PDF version is available from the RIKEN internal website.

FamilySupport-Family-Related Leave

The Personnel Division administers programs of special leave and reduced working hours for parents with young children. The availability of the programs depends on the age of your child; programs are divided up into the time of pregnancy, the first three years, and up to entering elementary school. Many of the programs are open to both mothers and fathers. Further details are available on the RIKEN internal website.

FamilySupport-Personal Support Coordinators

The Personal Support Coordinators will assist anyone whose work at RIKEN requires special measures due to pregnancy, childbirth, childcare, or the care of sick or elderly family members. Each person's situation is unique. The Personal Support Coordinators will help you determine your specific needs and arrange for appropriate support. When measures already in place do not meet an individual's needs, the Committee for Gender Equality will look for solutions. The Personal Support Coordinators act as your personal advisor and liaison with the Committee and the various RIKEN divisions and sections concerned.

FamilySupport-Babysitter Subsidy

The Welfare Section provides babysitting discount tickets for employees on all campuses. You may only apply for the babysitter subsidy when you require babysitting services so that you may work. Each family can use one ¥1700 discount ticket per day and a maximum of 1 ticket per day and 120 per year. Further details are available on the RIKEN internal website.

FamilySupport-Subsidy to pay for a research support person

This subsidy, available to  pregnant research staff or research staff taking care of small children, was introduced in FY 2007 and more and more research staff are using it to help them achieve work-life balance. Further details are available on the RIKEN internal website.
